SOTD

The great thing about music is the fact that you can always find a song that fits your current mood. No matter what you are feeling you can find a melody, a riff, or lyric that emotes what is on your mind.

It's that time of year again!

Searched

From WTSP.com:

New Port Richey, Florida - Airport security is a part of traveling these days, from walking through X-Ray machines to being patted down. But one New Port Richey couple contacted 10 News to say the search they received went too far.

"It was extremely thorough, almost a violation, "says Jason Steitler as he describes how a TSA official searched him at the Greater Rochester International Airport July 6th. Steitler's disability requires he uses a wheelchair.

"They did the hair then did the neck. Then they had me do a pushup in my chair, then got down into my inner thigh around my back side. It's the most thorough search [I've] had done in my life," says Steitler.

Steitler and his wife, Jennifer, were heading home to New Port Richey that morning. She too is in a wheel chair and was searched by a TSA official.

"She's been using the phrase 'search raped' because it was that thorough. She says it was nearly to her crotch," says Steitler. "I feel the chair should have option of either scanner or searches, but automatically we're being thrown to being patted down."

Steitler says they've complained to the TSA about their experience at Rochester International Airport, but all they've received back is a standard form letter.

"Just the standard reply to everything: 'In order to fly you have to be searched,'" says Steitler.

In an email to the Steitlers, a TSA official writes, "We apologize for any insensitivity or inappropriate treatment you experienced during the screening process."

In another email, a TSA official says, "We believe these security measures are necessary and appropriate for ensuring the security and confidence of all air travelers."

The Steitlers say they are not opposed to the searches, just the way the disabled are treated when it's done. Steitler says, "Generally, be fair about it. Don't hold the disabled up to more scrutiny just because they are in chairs."

Noah Lebowitz, the director of communications for Monroe County and spokesperson for Greater Rochester International Airport, tells 10 News in a written statement, "The Greater Rochester International Airport always strives to provide outstanding customer service to our passengers and ensure that they enjoy a convenient and safe travel experience. The security screening protocols in question are the jurisdiction of the federal government through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). If any passenger believes that our airport could have provided them with an enhanced customer experience, we encourage them to contact us."

Steitler says he plans to become an advocate for the disabled until he feels the security protocol is fair and equal for all.

I can certainly understand how this couple feels having just gone through this myself. Flying out of Saint Louis I was put through the "search obstacle course." Complete with being asked to do a w/c pushup. But, I'm not sure I would go so far as to call it "search raped." Those are strong words, which I'm sure is why they were used.

I was offered the opportunity for a private room, but declined. I had anticipated it would take some time to get through and I didn't want to waste anymore time than necessary. This of course was before I knew just how long and invasive it was going to be. Besides, were people really going to be looking at me? Probably not, they were wanting to get their stuff and go, not check me out. (Besides the ladies of course!)

Anyways, after being questioned extensively about my tools for my wheelchair, having my backside felt up (I'm guessing, I couldn't feel it, but I could see where his hands were going) and having just about every inch of my chair swabbed for explosive material I was free to go. In all it took about ten minutes.

It's easy for me to say that I didn't pose a security risk and complain about the treatment, but those working security don't know that.

I wish there was an easier way for people in wheelchairs to get through security at airports, but such is life in a wheelchair. Things aren't the same no matter what people say, but we all have our problems. It's called life!

Things That Make You Go BOO...

I have been waiting for a GOOD horror movie all summer. Missing the film Insidious when it was out in theaters, I couldn’t wait until this past Tuesday when it would finally come out on video. I had been hearing good things about the film and couldn’t wait to get my “scare on”. Thanks to my loving wife, I finally got to experience the film this past Tuesday…

The storyline is nothing new. A family moves into a big house. They have three children, one being a small infant. Dalton, one of the older boys, ends up going into an unexplainable deep coma and ends up in the hospital. After months without change, the parents bring Dalton back to care for him at home. Strange things start happening such as unexplainable noises and Renai, the mother, begins to see people about the house. It all leads up to a climactic scene forcing our family to move out of the home into another home. But…things don’t calm down there either…

The movie’s beginning is fantastic. We have a great setting in the home, a classic location for a ghost story/haunted house flick. There are several scares in the first half that really work well. It is after they move from the original location that the film begins to lose pace. Why did the writers think it was necessary to take this course? I am not sure, but this totally ruined the film for me. Instead of a classic haunted house story, it ends up turning into something a little more disappointing.

Insidious does have its scares. There are several visual scenes that will make your skin crawl and turn to the person seated next to you and ask, “What the heck was that?” I did this often. However, director James Wan relies too much on the quick jump scares accompanied by increased volume of music that got annoying more than frightening as the film went on.

The film does try to pull off a twist at the end. Nothing really original here, but I will give Wan some credit for at least TRYING to be creative.

Overall, Insidious was a MAJOR disappointment to me. I was hoping for something mind blowing and frightening, instead I got a rehashing of the original Poltergeist film with cheap scares and a change in film direction that was not necessary whatsoever. If you aren’t picky about your fright flicks, Insidious will probably do it for you. If you are, like me, keep searching…

Wait A Minute

In my defense regarding the roll:

1. It's not like the cinnamon roll had been there for days, it was from that day.

2. The cats still got fed.

3. Nobody tried to stop me before I ate it.

4. It still tasted pretty good.

5. There was nothing toxic, at least to me!

Ok, so maybe it's not the best defense in the world, but it's the best I have.

Keep a Rollin', Rollin', Rollin'...Cinnamon Rollin'!

I made the kids cinnamon rolls this morning…good old breakfast classic! As the kids were chowing down on the sugary goodness, a memory far in the back of my mind exploded forward. An early memory…of JMH…

Matt and I were hanging at my parents’ house. It was late at night and we were getting ready to head out and do something, probably go back to Matt’s parents’ house to swim. We were gathered in the kitchen with my two sisters talking. That was when Matt spotted it…

“What’s that?” Matt asked pointing to the stove top.

I turned. Nestled in the center of the burners was mom’s round cake pan she used to cook various morsels. She had used it that morning to make cinnamon rolls. All of them had been devoured by us except for one, which was still currently in the pan. But it wasn’t alone. Mom’s cake pan had become the “collect all” for that day. Whatever had been left over from lunch and supper had become scraps in the pan. The cinnamon roll was nestled amongst all sorts of foreign debris. The only recognizable food item in the pan besides the roll was a huge piece of ham sitting on top of it as if it was a cherry on top of an ice cream sundae.

“That is a pile of leftovers for the cats,” I responded.

Matt walked up to the pan. “But there is a perfectly good cinnamon roll still in there!”

My sisters both laughed. I am not sure which one said it, but one shouted out “You can have it if you want!”

That was all the invitation Matt needed. He looked down at the pan, pulled off the piece of pork, picked up the roll that dripped with toxic liquid, and then made the roll extinct in one large gulp. He turned to my sisters and smiled. They drew back in horror. I laughed, for I knew what had been coming once the invitation had been made!

To this day, I can’t look at a cinnamon roll exactly the same way…or ham for that matter. Come to think of it…I can’t look at onion rings either! But, that is another story!

That’s nice!

Happy Independence Day SOTD

Play me a song Curtis Loew.

Happy 4th of July. On this day let us remember what sets America apart:

"America is an exceptional nation, but not because of what it has achieved or accomplished. America is exceptional because, unlike any other nation, it is dedicated to the principles of human liberty, grounded on the truths that all men are created equal and endowed with equal rights." Matthew Spaulding

Equal rights that aren't granted by any government, but by Almighty God. We have truly been blessed as a nation. Let's continue to remember it was Him who has blessed us.

Say What?

Last week I noticed a headline that read: A Georgia company recalled about 217,000 of its cutlery knife sets due to a laceration hazard.

Isn't that the point of knives?

Note to self: Do NOT leave your Zune in the van all day when the heat index is 107. It doesn't take kindly to that kind of treatment. (Now if I could just find the keys to the DeLorean and tell myself this two days ago!)

For those that are Canadian, been to Canada or just wanted an unique excuse to have a 4 day weekend - Happy Canada Day! It's great to be independent, eh?

To celebrate Canada Day I'd like to share this quote - "I get to go to lots of overseas places, like Canada." Britney Spears
