IFC - Independent Film Channel

I'm not usually a big fan of independent movies. I'm sure it's more of a statement on me than it is on the quality of movies. However on Saturday I ended up watching two movies from IFC.

The first one was Flypaper with Patrick Dempsey, Mekhi Phifer, Ashley Judd and Jeffery Tambor. Think Clue meets Ocean's Eleven meets Raising Arizona meets Die Hard meets any number of Rom-Com's. It's not going to make anyone's list of Best Movies of All Time, but it was entertaining to me, even if it did feel a little rushed.

The central premise is what would happen if a bank was robbed simultaneously by two sets of bank robbers. Mix that in with an inevitable love story and it's actually pretty good. I'm not sure how it didn't get broad release. I've seen some of the junk that comes out in wide release and this was certainly better fare than some I've seen.

Also, I watched One Week. A quirky movie about a serious question, "if you only had one week to live, what would you do?" It was entertaining in a very different way than Flypaper, but certainly worth the time to watch. It chronicles a guy, Ben Tyler, played by Joshua Jackson on a motorcycle trip from Toronto to Tofino after hearing he has an aggressive form of cancer.

It's certainly Canadian from its understated quality to scenery to all the Canadian references such as the Tim Horton's 'roll up the rim to win' coffee cups, but anyone can watch and enjoy.

I'm not sure I'm completed converted to indie films, I did watch Super 8 the same day after all, but I will certainly be keeping my eyes open for more sleepers.

With the holiday travel season upon us it's a good time to review some facts about seat belts. It only takes one time to forget to be another number.

Safety Belt Statistics from James Madison University:

One out of every five drivers will be involved in a traffic crash this year.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among people age 44 and younger and the number one cause of head and spinal cord injury.

Approximately 35,000 people die in motor vehicle crashes each year. About 50 percent (17,000) of these people could be saved if they wore their safety belts.

More than 90 percent of all motorists believe safety belts are good idea, but less than 14 percent actually use them.

For every one percent increase in safety belt use, 172 lives and close to $100 million in annual injury and death costs could be saved.

Safety belts when used properly reduce the number of serious traffic injuries by 50 percent and fatalities by 60-70 percent.

For maximum protection safety belts should be fastened before traveling any distance or speed. Seventy-five percent of crash deaths and injuries occur within 25 miles of home. More than half of all injury-producing motor vehicle crashes involve low speeds under 40 m.p.h.

Motorists are 25 times are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when they are "thrown clear" than when remain inside their vehicle.

In a 30 m.p.h. collision an unbelted 160 lb. Person can strike another passenger, crash through a windshield and/or slam into the vehicle's interior with a 4,800 lb. force.

Motorists can increase safety belt usage by example and verbal reminders. Nine out of 10 people buckle up when asked.

Safety belt use is one of the best defenses against the unpredictable actions of the drunk driver.

Today over 25 countries around the world have some type of mandatory safety belt law. Results of these laws were measured; usage rate went from 20-25 percent before passage to 60-90 percent after passage.

A common cause of death and injury to children in motor vehicles is being crushed by adults who are not wearing safety belts. On out of four serious injuries to passengers is caused by occupants being thrown into each other.

About 80 percent of all injuries to children in car crashes are injuries to the head, causing brain damage, permanent disfigurement, epilepsy or death.

Of every 100 children who die in motor vehicle crashes at least 80 would survive if they were properly secured in an approved child safety seat or safety belts.

Three out of four families with child safety seats fail to use them correctly. Adults need to follow manufacturer's instructions and secure seats properly before every trip.

An estimated 80 percent of American children area immunized against contagious diseases, but less than 10 percent are properly restrained when riding in a motor vehicle.

15 Years Ago

Fifteen years ago I thought the world was getting back to the way it should be. The boys basketball team was winning again at GP, Chevy had brought back the Camaro Z28, The Dukes of Hazzard was back on television, Steve Perry was finally back with Journey, they had put out a new album and it was only a matter of time before they would be on tour, John Travolta was making movies worth watching and Eric Clapton was being played on hit radio again. Life was good.

I remember going to the movies to watch Phenomenon. It's still the only movie I went to see at the theater by myself and this SOTD was part of the movie. It landed at #6 on Billboard this week 15 years ago.



Funny how things change. The Camaro is back but without the Z28 or T-tops, The Dukes of Hazzard is on DVD, Travolta is back making questionable movies, Clapton is back to being played on "classic" radio and Steve Perry hurt his hip hiking and eventually Journey decided to tour without him. Sometimes life is like an albatross around the neck, but Don't Stop Believing!

President Obama and his Christmas Tree Tax

Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. It would be funny, if it wasn't so incredibly stupid. Is there anything they won't tax? The following article is from Heritage.org.

President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

In the Federal Register of November 8, 2011, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Marketing David R. Shipman announced that the Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. The purpose of the Board is to run a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry” (7 CFR 1214.46(n)). And the program of “information” is to include efforts to “enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States” (7 CFR 1214.10).

To pay for the new Federal Christmas tree image improvement and marketing program, the Department of Agriculture imposed a 15-cent fee on all sales of fresh Christmas trees by sellers of more than 500 trees per year (7 CFR 1214.52). And, of course, the Christmas tree sellers are free to pass along the 15-cent Federal fee to consumers who buy their Christmas trees.

Acting Administrator Shipman had the temerity to say the 15-cent mandatory Christmas tree fee “is not a tax nor does it yield revenue for the Federal government” (76 CFR 69102). The Federal government mandates that the Christmas tree sellers pay the 15-cents per tree, whether they want to or not. The Federal government directs that the revenue generated by the 15-cent fee goes to the Board appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out the Christmas tree program established by the Secretary of Agriculture. Mr. President, that’s a new 15-cent tax to pay for a Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

Nobody is saying President Obama doesn’t have authority to impose his new Christmas Tree Tax — his Administration cites the Commodity Promotion, Research and Information Act of 1996. Just because the Obama Administration has the legal power to impose its Christmas Tree Tax doesn’t mean it should do so.

The economy is barely growing and nine percent of the American people have no jobs. Is a new tax on Christmas trees the best President Obama can do?

And, by the way, the American Christmas tree has a great image that doesn’t need any help from the government.

So You're Saying It's Not Good?

Are you sitting down? Perfect. Please take a moment to check in with your body. Is your rear kind of numb? Do the backs of your thighs feel smushed? Is your lower back all crunched? This is your body crying out for help! Really.

A wave of new research indicates that sitting all day is actively damaging your health. By forcing a body designed for movement to hold a crushingly immobile position, sitting strains muscles, slows your metabolism, increases your risk of heart disease, and even shortens your life span. "Sitting is a health hazard on the order of smoking," says Marc Hamilton, PhD, a microbiologist at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

I was once like you: I sat 10 to 11 hours a day. And then, in 2008, I was researching an article about newfangled chairs and learned that few of the designers actually sat on chairs because of the ill effects on their health. Tired of that glommed-up, dull feeling I got at my desk, I shoved my chair to the side and tried a standing desk. Over the next six months, I slowly rid my home of chairs. I couldn't believe how my body responded. My back pain disappeared, along with my poor posture. And 15 pounds nearly fell off my frame. Need more incentives? Here's why over-sitting must — —and can — —be stopped.

Sitting makes you fat

When you park your butt in a chair, your metabolism comes to a screeching halt. It's all because of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which resides in the blood vessels of your muscles. "Lipoprotein lipase captures fat in the blood and incinerates it," says Hamilton. When you're standing, the postural muscles that support your weight, mostly in your legs, release the enzyme, which goes to work burning fat. But when you're sitting still, and not shifting every 30 to 90 seconds as the body does naturally, "the fat stays in the arteries, and can be stored in adipose tissue— — also known as body fat," Hamilton explains.

A typical day of sitting lowers lipoprotein lipase activity by 90 to 95 percent (in animals), which is why when Hamilton takes blood samples of his human subjects while they're sitting and eating, the plasma—ideally clear—is white and chunky, filled with fat, the sign of a sluggish metabolism.

Worse yet, experts say that 60 to 90 minutes of daily exercise may not counteract the effects of sitting all day. In fact, Hamilton says, the biochemical reactions slowed by sitting are completely different from the ones that are activated by your daily workout. The biggest difference between thin and fat people is not how much they eat or exercise, but how much they sit, according to James Levine, MD, an obesity researcher at the Mayo Clinic. In a now famed 2005 study, Dr. Levine placed mildly obese and lean participants with similar, fairly healthy diets in sensored "magic" underwear that recorded their body position every half second. The thin people spent a whopping 120 fewer minutes every day sitting, and the overweight people would have burned an average of 350 more calories if they'd engaged in as many non-exercise-related activities (i.e., puttering around). The take-home message: Sitting can have just as great an effect on your weight than eating or exercise, all because our metabolism engine is fueled by constant little movements.

Sitting messes with your back

Your powerful abdominal, pelvic, and leg muscles evolved to do the work of supporting your 100-plus pounds of organs and bones. "But when you sit, you're placing most of your weight directly on the spine and pelvis instead," explains Andrew Hecht, MD, co-chief of spinal surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. You're also forcing the natural S-curve of your spine into a C-shape, which isn't strong enough to take the pressure. "Imagine resting a heavy weight on top of the letter S or C," says Galen Cranz, PhD, author of The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body & Design. "Which is going to collapse more easily?"

Sitting shortens your life

How's this for a case against being on your bum? A long-term study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2010 followed nearly 70,000 healthy women and their daily habits for 14 years. After adjusting for risk factors including body mass index and smoking, researchers found that women who spent six hours a day sitting had a 37 percent increased risk of dying versus those who spent less than three hours a day seated. Also, death rates from cardiovascular disease were 2.7 times higher in women who sat six or more hours a day, regardless of how much they exercised or weighed. Yes, sitting literally kills.

Death of Zune HD

Microsoft has officially confirmed the death of its Zune player devices.

The software giant removed references to the Zune HD from its Zune site on Monday and later claimed that the removal was "a mistake." It appears the the reference removals may have been planned for later but were mistakenly pushed early. A new support article on Microsoft's Zune support pages make it very clear:

"We recently announced that, going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy, and that we will no longer be producing Zune players. So what does this mean for our current Zune users? Absolutely nothing. Your device will continue to work Zune services just as it does today. And we will continue to honor the warranties of all devices for both current owners and those who buy our very last devices. Custormer service has been, and will remain a top priority for us."

The confirmation marks the end of Microsoft's range of Zune devices that failed to prove popular against Apple's rival iPod offerings. Microsoft killed off its Zune originals devices earlier this year, marking the beginning of the end. The company urged consumers to purchase a Windows Phone 7 device for the Zune experience. "See how Windows Phone isn't just a phone, it's also a great Zune music and video player!", said the final part of Microsoft's message confirming the axe. A learn more button at the bottom of the page pushed users to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 site.

Microsoft recently confirmed that it is working to port Zune HD applications to Windows Phone. Former Zune senior business development manager Dave McLauchlan revealed the company's plans in a recent Zune Insider podcast. Zune has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. Microsoft was forced to confirm it is not "killing" any Zune services after it was revealed that the company plans to rebrand into Windows Live shortly.

As of the close of business on Oct. 3, the total national debt was $14,837,099,271,196.71—up about $44.8 billion from Sept. 30.

That means that in the less-than-three-years Obama has been in office, the federal debt has increased by $4.212 trillion--more than the total national debt of about $4.1672 trillion accumulated by all 41 U.S. presidents from George Washington through George H.W. Bush combined. This $4.212-trillion increase in the national debt means that during Obama’s term the federal government has already borrowed about an additional $35,835 for every American household--or $44,980 for every full-time private-sector worker. (According to the Census Bureau there were about 117,538,000 households in the country in 2010, and, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were about 93,641,000 full-time private-sector workers.)

When Obama was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2009, according to the Treasury Department, the total national debt stood at $10,626,877,048,913.08. At the end of January 1993, the month that President George H. W. Bush left office, the total national debt was $4.1672 trillion, according to the Treasury. Thus, the total national debt accumulated by the first 41 presidents combined was about $44.8 billion less than the approximately $4.212 trillion in new debt added during Obama’s term.

As of Monday, Obama had been in office 986 days—or about 32 and a half months. During that time, the debt increased at an average pace of $4.27 billion per day. Were that rate to continue until Obama’s term ends on Jan. 20, 2013, the debt would then stand at about $16.86534 trillion—an increase of more than $6.2 trillion for Obama’s four years. That would equal nearly $53,000 for each American household or more than $66,00 for each full-time private-sector worker. That total national debt did not exceed $6.2 trillion until 2002, when George W. Bush was president.

I have been to many great concerts, but getting to see Jimmy Page and Robert Plant together on one stage has to be one of the best. It wasn't a full fledge Zeppelin reunion and it was all acoustic, but it was the most electric atmosphere at a concert I've ever been a part of. It was simply brilliant.

Next up...James is more known for his songwriting, but a few years back he went behind the mic and had the year's most played song on the radio.

SOTD - Give It Away

Each SOTD comes about in a different way. I choose most of them and most of the time it's not a struggle, as soon as I hear it, I just know that that's the one. Other times I get suggestions from friends or requests. Sometimes, I have to work to try and find something I want to post as SOTD. However, there are times when a SOTD chooses itself and won't be denied.

Yesterday I had the radio on listening to music for about a total of 20 minutes on a very long drive. The other 4 hours was spent on the phone, listening to my Zune or even talk radio for a few minutes. In those 20 minutes spent listening to music on the radio, I heard this song 3 times, which wouldn't be that surprising if the song wasn't 20 years old. Then upon powering up my Zune, the fourth random song to play was...you guessed it, Give It Away for the fourth time of the day. Apparently it had heard about the great prestige that comes with being named a SOTD and just had to have it.

That's almost as bad as the guidance counselor not having the class schedules ready at the beginning of the year, so the Freshmen class had to sit in the gym and entertain ourselves all day for the first week or so of the school year.

Do I Hear FIFTY?

As I turned 37 yesterday, I began to reminisce about some of my past birthday experiences. One that instantly popped into my mind was my 21st birthday.

21 is a special age to reach. A time when one is suppose to go out and do something EXTRAORDINARY for their birthday. My best friend Matt had bashed his cranium trying to come up with something to do that evening. Something we hadn’t done before. Something that would be unique and special. He came up with a plan…we would head out to the Casino Queen and try and become RICH!

Neither of us were gamblers and couldn’t play CARDS for a lick, unless you counted us cheating my sister and her husband out of a game called Rummy 2000…my strategy, just keep throwing crap down as fast as you can and they can’t tell if it is legit or not. Worked, Matt Hoyt and my sister never really knew we weren’t winning those hands! But, we decided to try our luck at the riverboat. Something new…something we hadn’t done before.

When we parked, Matt and I both made an agreement. Neither of us had really high paying jobs…he was a manager at McDonalds and I was a manager at Long John Silvers… and we were both still trying to pay our way through college, so we both left everything in the car except our driver’s license and fifty dollars.

One can easily be overwhelmed by all the lights and sounds of a casino. Since we were both young and inexperienced in this realm, we were. We walked around the entire casino before we set our sights on what was to be our first gambling experience. The Blackjack table. We approached.

“Yes sir,” the man in a tuxedo behind the counter said holding a stack of cards. He smiled. Seemed pleasant enough.

Matt put down a ten. “I’d like to play.”

The man looked at Matt and smiled. “Sir,” he said almost with a chuckle, “It is a MINIMUM fifty dollar buy in.”

I looked at Matt trying not to make it obvious how shocked I was. FIFTY DOLLARS! That was his whole budget. I watched as Matt reached out and pulled back his ten.

“I knew that.” He said quietly and we both walked away. Humbled, Matt and I quickly located a change machine and spent the rest of the evening playing the slot machines.

Matt and I played and played until we were both broke. Neither of us gained anything monetarily that evening. Walking out, we came down the ramp off of the boat. I looked at Matt.

“I can’t believe we both just lost fifty in there and nothing to show for it!”
Matt shook his head in agreement.

“You BOTH lost fifty!” I heard a voice from behind me. I turned around to see a man who looked as ordinary as the two of us leaning on the railing.

“Yeah.” I responded.

“Man! I lost fifty too!”

Matt smiled, “Sucks doesn’t it!”

“Yep! Fifty thousand is a lot of money!”

Matt and I looked at each other in awe. FIFTY THOUSAND? We both just shook our head and agreed.

“I hope you two have gas money to get home. Man….100 thousand. You two have worse luck than I do!” He headed off down the ramp and out into the parking lot.

I looked at Matt…he at me…and we both started laughing!

I have had sixteen birthdays come and go since then…but I can honestly say my 21st birthday will go down as the birthday I lost the most money…FIFTY!

It's called a uniform for a reason

Had to share Jason's press conference from today. Most people won't be interested in all of it or any of it, but for an excellent story about team, scroll into the 16:00 mark. You don't have to be a fan of Jason Garrett or the Dallas Cowboys to appreciate it.

I absolutely love the last 2:30 minutes. "Why do you alway wear a grey shirt and blue pants?" You know the reporter had no idea what a motivational answer he was about to get from such a simple question. Still gives me goosebumps and I've watched it 4 times now. Good coaches teach about a season, great coaches teach about life.

New Port Richey, Florida - Airport security is a part of traveling these days, from walking through X-Ray machines to being patted down. But one New Port Richey couple contacted 10 News to say the search they received went too far.

"It was extremely thorough, almost a violation, "says Jason Steitler as he describes how a TSA official searched him at the Greater Rochester International Airport July 6th. Steitler's disability requires he uses a wheelchair.

"They did the hair then did the neck. Then they had me do a pushup in my chair, then got down into my inner thigh around my back side. It's the most thorough search [I've] had done in my life," says Steitler.

Steitler and his wife, Jennifer, were heading home to New Port Richey that morning. She too is in a wheel chair and was searched by a TSA official.

"She's been using the phrase 'search raped' because it was that thorough. She says it was nearly to her crotch," says Steitler. "I feel the chair should have option of either scanner or searches, but automatically we're being thrown to being patted down."

Steitler says they've complained to the TSA about their experience at Rochester International Airport, but all they've received back is a standard form letter.

"Just the standard reply to everything: 'In order to fly you have to be searched,'" says Steitler.

In an email to the Steitlers, a TSA official writes, "We apologize for any insensitivity or inappropriate treatment you experienced during the screening process."

In another email, a TSA official says, "We believe these security measures are necessary and appropriate for ensuring the security and confidence of all air travelers."

The Steitlers say they are not opposed to the searches, just the way the disabled are treated when it's done. Steitler says, "Generally, be fair about it. Don't hold the disabled up to more scrutiny just because they are in chairs."

Noah Lebowitz, the director of communications for Monroe County and spokesperson for Greater Rochester International Airport, tells 10 News in a written statement, "The Greater Rochester International Airport always strives to provide outstanding customer service to our passengers and ensure that they enjoy a convenient and safe travel experience. The security screening protocols in question are the jurisdiction of the federal government through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). If any passenger believes that our airport could have provided them with an enhanced customer experience, we encourage them to contact us."

Steitler says he plans to become an advocate for the disabled until he feels the security protocol is fair and equal for all.

I can certainly understand how this couple feels having just gone through this myself. Flying out of Saint Louis I was put through the "search obstacle course." Complete with being asked to do a w/c pushup. But, I'm not sure I would go so far as to call it "search raped." Those are strong words, which I'm sure is why they were used.

I was offered the opportunity for a private room, but declined. I had anticipated it would take some time to get through and I didn't want to waste anymore time than necessary. This of course was before I knew just how long and invasive it was going to be. Besides, were people really going to be looking at me? Probably not, they were wanting to get their stuff and go, not check me out. (Besides the ladies of course!)

Anyways, after being questioned extensively about my tools for my wheelchair, having my backside felt up (I'm guessing, I couldn't feel it, but I could see where his hands were going) and having just about every inch of my chair swabbed for explosive material I was free to go. In all it took about ten minutes.

It's easy for me to say that I didn't pose a security risk and complain about the treatment, but those working security don't know that.

I wish there was an easier way for people in wheelchairs to get through security at airports, but such is life in a wheelchair. Things aren't the same no matter what people say, but we all have our problems. It's called life!

Things That Make You Go BOO...

I have been waiting for a GOOD horror movie all summer. Missing the film Insidious when it was out in theaters, I couldn’t wait until this past Tuesday when it would finally come out on video. I had been hearing good things about the film and couldn’t wait to get my “scare on”. Thanks to my loving wife, I finally got to experience the film this past Tuesday…

The storyline is nothing new. A family moves into a big house. They have three children, one being a small infant. Dalton, one of the older boys, ends up going into an unexplainable deep coma and ends up in the hospital. After months without change, the parents bring Dalton back to care for him at home. Strange things start happening such as unexplainable noises and Renai, the mother, begins to see people about the house. It all leads up to a climactic scene forcing our family to move out of the home into another home. But…things don’t calm down there either…

The movie’s beginning is fantastic. We have a great setting in the home, a classic location for a ghost story/haunted house flick. There are several scares in the first half that really work well. It is after they move from the original location that the film begins to lose pace. Why did the writers think it was necessary to take this course? I am not sure, but this totally ruined the film for me. Instead of a classic haunted house story, it ends up turning into something a little more disappointing.

Insidious does have its scares. There are several visual scenes that will make your skin crawl and turn to the person seated next to you and ask, “What the heck was that?” I did this often. However, director James Wan relies too much on the quick jump scares accompanied by increased volume of music that got annoying more than frightening as the film went on.

The film does try to pull off a twist at the end. Nothing really original here, but I will give Wan some credit for at least TRYING to be creative.

Overall, Insidious was a MAJOR disappointment to me. I was hoping for something mind blowing and frightening, instead I got a rehashing of the original Poltergeist film with cheap scares and a change in film direction that was not necessary whatsoever. If you aren’t picky about your fright flicks, Insidious will probably do it for you. If you are, like me, keep searching…

4. It still tasted pretty good.

Keep a Rollin', Rollin', Rollin'...Cinnamon Rollin'!

I made the kids cinnamon rolls this morning…good old breakfast classic! As the kids were chowing down on the sugary goodness, a memory far in the back of my mind exploded forward. An early memory…of JMH…

Matt and I were hanging at my parents’ house. It was late at night and we were getting ready to head out and do something, probably go back to Matt’s parents’ house to swim. We were gathered in the kitchen with my two sisters talking. That was when Matt spotted it…

“What’s that?” Matt asked pointing to the stove top.

I turned. Nestled in the center of the burners was mom’s round cake pan she used to cook various morsels. She had used it that morning to make cinnamon rolls. All of them had been devoured by us except for one, which was still currently in the pan. But it wasn’t alone. Mom’s cake pan had become the “collect all” for that day. Whatever had been left over from lunch and supper had become scraps in the pan. The cinnamon roll was nestled amongst all sorts of foreign debris. The only recognizable food item in the pan besides the roll was a huge piece of ham sitting on top of it as if it was a cherry on top of an ice cream sundae.

“That is a pile of leftovers for the cats,” I responded.

Matt walked up to the pan. “But there is a perfectly good cinnamon roll still in there!”

My sisters both laughed. I am not sure which one said it, but one shouted out “You can have it if you want!”

That was all the invitation Matt needed. He looked down at the pan, pulled off the piece of pork, picked up the roll that dripped with toxic liquid, and then made the roll extinct in one large gulp. He turned to my sisters and smiled. They drew back in horror. I laughed, for I knew what had been coming once the invitation had been made!

To this day, I can’t look at a cinnamon roll exactly the same way…or ham for that matter. Come to think of it…I can’t look at onion rings either! But, that is another story!

The Day We Were Saved by The Dukes of Hazzard

The summer months are always concert time, especially as a young adult. JMH used to live for concert season. The summer 15 years ago was no different. It was 15 years ago this month that JM and I decided to travel to Indianapolis for Lollapalooza, the biggest music festival of its time. The year was 1996. That of course was the year that Metallica was headlining and so we thought it would be a great time to experience the music fest.

JM and I took 4 other guys with us to show them a good time. We drove over the night before so we could be there first thing in the morning. We were going to have a good time, but the weather was sweltering. No clouds and the sun felt like it was about an inch from your skin. I remember it was just so hot and this was going to be a long day. Music started around 12N and Metallica wouldn't be taking the stage until around 8. Since we were on a budget and let's face it, "events" like these needs to be experienced from the grass, we had just purchased general admission lawn seats.

Along with Metallica, Soundgarden, Ramones, Rancid, Shaolin Monks (seriously, I can't make that up), Screaming Trees and Psychotica would be on the main stage. There was also a side stage and an indie stage around the venue where concert goers could take in such acts as Soul Coughing, Sponge and Korn.

In addition, there would always be a "secret" special guest at each concert that would take the main stage. This was before there was only one date a year in Chicago, so as the concert made its way around the country, each stop would have its own special guest star. In 1996 special guests included, Rage Against the Machine, Devo, 311, Cheap Trick and Wu-Tang Clan among others. Any of these would have been appropriate and matched the vibe that was going on that day.

So now it's time for the "secret" special guest star to appear. Please keep in mind that a band named Rancid just left the stage, Rancid! The emcee comes out and starts addressing the crowd, it went something like this, "and now please welcome Waylon Jennings." Say what?

Waylon "Freaking" Jennings! Now don't get me wrong, I love Waylon, but not in this setting or venue. JM turned to me as I turned to him, we just instantly knew, this was going to turn ugly. We both said a few choice words I'm sure and begin discussing our options. It was as if someone flipped a switch and 30,000 very hot and extremely drunk and rowdy concert goers decided to take out all of their frustration at once. They wanted Rage or 311, but was getting Waylon Jennings!

Had it just been JM and I, everything would've been ok, but we had kids with us. Kids whose moms and dads had entrusted us with their well-being. Now granted, it wasn't their wisest choice in life, but still it was the one they made and I know we both took the responsibility seriously. We started rounding the other 4 up, especially Snyder. He was the tiniest of the group and would be easy pickings if not protected.

We quickly reviewed with all of them how serious this situation could be and they derided us as being "old" and parent like, but still they listened and they stayed close.

Now the mayhem started with bottles being thrown. Ok, no big deal, we can handle that, but it quickly escalated into other things being thrown; lawn chairs and coolers. Coolers? I didn't even know coolers could be brought in, but there they were high in the air and starting to collect their victims. Security started coming through the lawn to settle everyone down, but they were quickly outnumbered and became invisible from our perspective.

As if on a timer, clouds instantly developed and it started pouring down rain. I'm not talking a sprinkle or a steady rain. I'm talking about the clouds opening up and letting loose, just like all of these angry people were. It was coming down so hard, that the grass didn't stand a chance and the lawn area quickly became a mud pit. The lawn area suddenly became just one large mosh pit, with everyone slamming into everyone. Mosh pits are one thing and JM and I had been in our share of pits, but this was different. It was angrier in all sorts of ways.

It was about this time that I see the first human flying through the air. It took me a second to realize what was going on, but a group had decided to use their blanket as a make-shift trampoline. Several guys took hold of the blanket and started launching people. Not for good natured fun, but for the sole purpose of seeing how far they could make someone fly. It didn't take long for other groups to start copycatting this procedure and people were flying everywhere.

JM and I grabbed the guys and started moving for even higher ground. Getting towards the fence, at least that way we wouldn't get sniped from behind and would have the action in front of us. I begin praying for safety and guidance. What should we do, where should we go? I prayed that we could at least manage to stay long enough to hear the Theme from The Dukes of Hazzard. I know, priorities, right? But being a huge Dukes fan (yes, I've always been this way) I just had to hear Waylon sing it.

I don't remember how long Waylon's set was, it seemed like it lasted forever. The crowd was moving ever closer to our position. The lawn had become one big mud slide. People were sliding everywhere. On purpose! People were starting to throw mud at each other. Mud! Big handfuls of mud, just being launched at others. You could see people were bloody with faces cut, torn clothes and more. It was ugly and getting harder and harder to avoid getting seriously injured or at the very least mud covered.

And then it happened. The skies parted, the sun came out and Waylon started singing "Just two good old boys, never meaning no harm." The crowd stopped dead in their tracks. The flip had been switched off, they suddenly realized that there was still a concert going on and they all started singing. "Beats all you ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born."

I turned to JM and said, "Thank God for the Dukes of Hazzard!" Yee-haw. We had made it through the storm and lived, plus we had a story for the ages. The story of how we were saved by The Dukes of Hazzard.

Before You Speak

Woman to flight attendant (obviously angry): "I need to know where to sit, since HE is sitting in mine."

Flight attendant: "Just step over here to the side, while I get others on board, because he is definitely sitting there."

Woman trying to get out of the way of incoming passengers: "Excuse me, I'm just trying to get out of the way. SOMEONE is sitting in my seat!"

Man trying to board jet: "Did someone take your seat?"

Woman: "Yeah, he (pointing at the man in 3A) did."

Second Man (sarcastically): "I guess it's true, possession really is nine-tenths of the law."

First Man: "Wow, used to be men would give up their seat for women."

Woman: "Apparently not anymore."

First Man: "Where has chivalry gone?"

I learned a valuable lesson this week. Well, I learned it again, anyways. I can be a little slow at times when learning lessons. How many times have you been told to think before you speak? Some lessons are just harder to learn, I guess.

James warns us in his first chapter to "be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger," but so many times we do just the opposite and end up hurting people. It can be especially painful when we become quick to anger and begin speaking out of that very anger before we have all the facts. Proverbs warns us that those with quick tempers display folly, but a man who holds his tongue is wise.

Experience can be an invaluable teacher, but sometimes the most valuable lessons can't be learned until you experience it from the other side. It helps you understand things when you can see it from both sides of the glass.

You see, as the man sitting in 3A, I would've gladly given up my seat for her, if I could have. Here are more of the facts: I was originally slated to sit in 18A, but the flight crew had difficulty getting the high back chair down the aisle on the small regional jet, so they had to stop at row 3 and they asked me to transfer over into seat 3A. The flight was already running late and by switching me into this seat it would save valuable time and get us in the the air much quicker than fighting the aisle chair all the way to the back of the plane.

I know the woman didn't know that I was incapable of standing up and giving her seat to her and for that matter, neither did either of the guys she complained to. I look fairly normal by all accounts without my wheelchair underneath me. All of them were just reacting to the situation as they knew it. I have been quick to anger and quick to speak on numerous occassions and now I know full well how it feels to be on the receiving end of these moments. For that lesson, I wish to thank her. That moment has formed a powerful reminder for me of what one of my weaknesses can cause.

If possible, at that moment I would've proven that chivalry wasn't dead. I pray now that neither is learning from experience. If I can learn that, the other shall follow.

Father's Day SOTD

My father taught me many things growing up, values which I still hold today, but one thing he taught me was his varying tastes in music. One day he would be listening to country, the next hard rock and the next easy listening, I just never knew what he'd have on the radio. I seemed to be in the truck with him alot driving back and forth to work, so I was exposed to a lot of different sounds.

There are two particular albums I remember dad having in his console stereo, the first was Head East's self titled album and Jim Croce's compilation album Time In a Bottle and to this day, I still love them both as much as I did then. So today's SOTD is the timeless classic from Jim Croce.

SOTD - Hard Act to Follow

Brother Cane (they are definitely in my wheelhouse) was founded back in 1990 by Damon Johnson and had a string of hits, including "Got No Shame" and "And Fools Shine On." I always loved their sound, but like many bands their run ended way too soon.

Damon has stayed busy, touring with Damn Yankees, Alice Cooper, Slave to the System and being a member of the country rock band Whiskey Falls (they are sure to have a future SOTD). In addition, Damon has a new solo project that hit earlier this year and was out promoting it anywhere he could apparently, which may explain the old school arcade games in this video. Thankfully he and Brother Cane were just signed this month to a new management deal, so here's hoping for some new music.

This was always my favorite Brother Cane song and I love this "back porch" version.

The flag of the United States of America isn't just a piece of fabric waving in the wind, but a symbol of the very fabric, steadfast in it's beliefs, that is the United States. With all of our differences (good and bad) as Americans, we can still unite around our flag to support our country and defend our beliefs. A country which still stands as Lincoln said "the last best hope of earth."

A country which was founded on the belief that certain truths were "self-evident," truths that included "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Furthermore this country was established on the basis that "whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." Are we still living in the country that our Founding Fathers envisioned?

To continue to defend what the United States stands for we must continue to rely on God for strenth, wisdom and direction. “I am sure that never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a Divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our Revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God who is alone able to protect them.” George Washington

My challenge is that on this flag day we as a nation pray for ourselves and country. "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14.

My generation must now step up and protect what the flag stands for and against. It is our turn to show the world what it means to be an American. It means standing for freedom at all costs. Freedom for all men and women for they are created equal, freedom from an oppressive government which may stand in the way of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and freedom of religion, not from religion. Let's not forget how lucky we are to be able to be free to pursue our hopes and dreams.

Every generation that has come before us knew these truths and passed them on to us. Let us not be the generation that fails. I pray God that we have not lost our nerve. "May the LORD our God be with us as he was with our fathers; may he never leave us nor forsake us." 1 Kings 8:57

Hazzard Homecoming

John Schneider is busy and since he owns the rights to Dukesfest there won't be a Dukesfest this year. So Ben "Cooter" Jones has stepped in and will be hosting Hazzard Homecoming this year in Sperryville, VA, August 13th and 14th.

It will feature personal appearances by; Catherine Bach- "Daisy Duke", James Best- "Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane", Sonny Shroyer- "Deputy Enos Straight", Rich Hurst- "Deputy Cletus Hogg", and dozens of "General Lees". Tom and John aren't scheduled to be there.

It won't be the same after going to Atlanta last time and getting to see the original filming sites (many stories for another time), so not sure if Shane and I are going this time around. We will just have to see.

The Latest Pirate Film Made Me Go, "Arrrrrrrrr!"

Sometimes, it is better to leave things to the imagination. When we last saw Captain Jack Sparrow, he was in his little dingy with compass, map, and a bottle of alcohol setting off to search for the Fountain of Youth. For me, this was a perfect way to end the series. Jack sets off on other adventures bringing the three films to a nice wrap up, but left the character and adventures of one Captain Jack Sparrow alive and open to the imagination. Hollywood, however, hates those kinds of endings, especially when their is more money to be made. Thus, On Stranger Tides was released this year.

Without spoiling the film, the storyline of the film is simple, Jack is out to find the Fountain of Youth. He has some competition in Barbossa, who is working for the English, the Spanish, a new female lead Angelica, and the newly introduced pirate Blackbeard. As in the other pirate films, adventures ensue and characters turn on each other frequently.

So how was the film. Disappointing in my opinion for several reasons. First, off, I love the character of Captain Jack Sparrow and I love Johnny Depp, yet, this time around I felt as if Depp was just "going through the motions" as Sparrow. I was not as excited or intrigued by the character this go around. Though entertaining in spots, the character of Captain Jack just seemed a bit stale this time. Maybe the character has run its course?

Secondly, I loved the new character of Blackbeard. He had so much potential and started off as an intimidating force within the film. Then, at the end of the film, his dominance seemed to fizzle. He did not compare to villains from the previous films and that majorly disappointed me.

Then there were the new faces. We had Angelica played by Penelope Cruz, Swift the missionary, and Syrena the mermaid to name just a few. I came to care about NONE of these characters. Cruz just seemed like a replacement for Knightley and the love relationship between Swift and the mermaid seemed to just be thrown in to replace the relationship of Knightley and Bloom from the first trilogy. I am not the biggest fan of Orlando Bloom, simply because I feel he plays the SAME character in every film he is in, but I found myself MISSING him and Knightley in this fourth installment. I could not find the connection with the new characters that I did with the previous films.

Finally, there was the ending. I will not give anything away if you have not seen the film, but it seemed like a cross between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I had seen this sort of ending before and I expected MUCH more from a Pirates film.

Positives? The mermaids! This was the one sequence that I feel saved the film for me. These new creatures kicked some booty and I am pleased with how the film represented their mythology!

Overall, going into the movie I had high expectations. Those expectations were simply not met. If you look at On Stranger Tides as a fun action film experience, then it delivers somewhat. If you go in expecting Jack to take you to another level, you may leave somewhat disappointed.

Rumor has it this could be the beginning of a NEW trilogy. I am not so sure about that. If Bruckheimer and company want to go this route...PLEASE give us more of the Captain Jack Sparrow we deserve and we love. As Jack states in the film, "It's the pirate life for me!" I want to see him EXPERIENCE that life...to the fullest!

Memories

Growing up there was a "Teen Club" in Centralia. It was owned by a couple of guys who had a local radio morning show called "Drake and Wayne." I used to love going there on the weekends and acting like a grown up.

Besides music, dancing and hanging with friends, one of the coolest things about the club was drinking Clearly Canadian. It came in the those cool little bottles. It was awesome.

I seen this trailer driving the other day and it brought back so many memories. It's not a good picture ( I was driving too fast), so what you can't see very well is "Clearly Canadian" written on the side and then several bottles on ice.

Aldo Nova...WHO?

Some of you may be asking yourself this very question...who the heck is Aldo Nova? I don't remember much about his band, or what happened to them after this single. What I do remember is this song and video and I LOVED it soooo much, I went out and BOUGHT the cassette single! My...times have changed! Enjoy today's TOTD!

Sawyer Brown is certainly in the top 3 groups that JMH has seen the most times. Along with Reo and Metallica. There were a few summers we would see them 2 or 3 times, traveling here, there and everywhere. I agree with JM, gotta love his dancing. Imagine 2 hours of dancing just like in the video, it's truly entertaining.

Ok, on to the SOTD. I changed my SOTD at the last minute, I decided to honor Def Leppard as their new CD Mirror Ball dropped today. The first single is titled Undefeated. Take a listen and enjoy.

LONDON – After Rob Summers was paralyzed below the chest in a car accident in 2006, his doctors told him he would never stand again. They were wrong.

Despite intensive physical therapy for three years, Summers' condition hadn't improved. So in 2009, doctors implanted an electrical stimulator onto the lining of his spinal cord to try waking up his damaged nervous system. Within days, Summers, 25, stood without help. Months later, he wiggled his toes, moved his knees, ankles and hips, and was able to take a few steps on a treadmill.

"It was the most incredible feeling," said Summers, of Portland, Oregon. "After not being able to move for four years, I thought things could finally change."

Still, despite his renewed optimism, Summers can't stand when he's not in a therapy session with the stimulator turned on, and he normally gets around in a wheelchair. Doctors are currently limiting his use of the device to several hours at a time.

His case is described in a paper published Friday in the journal, Lancet. The research was paid for by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

For years, certain people with incomplete spinal cord injuries, who have some control of their limbs, have experienced some improvement after experiments to electrically stimulate their muscles. But such progress had not been seen before in someone with a complete spinal cord injury.

"This is not a cure, but it could lead to improved functionality in some patients," said Gregoire Courtine, head of experimental neurorehabilitation at the University of Zurich. He was not connected to Summers' case. Courtine cautioned Summers' recovery didn't make any difference to the patient's daily life and that more research was needed to help paralyzed people regain enough mobility to make a difference in their normal routines.

The electrical stimulator surgeons implanted onto Summers' spinal cord is usually used to relieve pain and can cost up to $20,000. Summers' doctors implanted it lower than normal, onto the very bottom of his vertebrae.

"The stimulator sends a general signal to the spinal cord to walk or stand," said Dr. Susan Harkema, rehabilitation research director at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center in Louisville and the Lancet study's lead author.

Harkema and her colleagues were surprised Summers was able to voluntarily move his legs. "That tells us we can access the circuitry of the nervous system, which opens up a whole new avenue for us to address paralysis," Harkema said. She said prescribing drugs might also speed recovery.

Dr. John McDonald, director of the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, said the strategy could be rapidly adopted for the 10 to 15 percent of paralyzed patients who might benefit. He was not connected to the Summers case.

"There is no question we will do this for our patients," he said. McDonald added that since the electrical stimulators are already approved for pain relief, it shouldn't be difficult to also study them to help some patients regain movement.

For now, Summers does about two hours a day of physical therapy.

"My ultimate goal is to walk and run again," he said. "I believe anything is possible and that I will get out of my wheelchair one day."

Ohhhhhhhhh Yeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!

It is not uncommon to hear of the untimely demise of talent in the world of professional wrestling. The past few years have been filled with the demise of some of the best to ever step inside of the squared circle. But, it is different when it is an ICON that you grew up watching. Someone you made a connection with. This past Friday, the wrestling universe lost one of the all time greats in the Macho Man Randy Savage!

Say what you want about professional wrestling, I am not here to defend it or beat it down either way. What I do wish to do is take the time to acknowledge a man who gave his all to an art he had his life embedded within...wrestling. Randy Savage WAS wrestling...whether it was for Vince's WWE(WWF back in his day) or Ted's WCW, Randy gave it his all!

Randy was larger than life. His entrance music...his ring attire...his promos...his manager Miss Elizabeth or Sensational Sherrie...and his in ring work were top notch. A better heel in my opinion than a face, Randy stood out among his peers. He had IT.

I was not always a Savage fan. My man was the Ultimate Warrior and I couldn't have been more pleased when Warrior took out Hogan at Wrestlemania VI. Warrior went on a run all the way into the Royal Rumble the following year. It was at that time that Savage was under the moniker of the Macho King and Warrior refused Savage a title shot. Thus, Savage cost Warrior the title at the Royal Rumble and my hatred of Savage truly began...I was unaware at this time that wrestling was scripted.

The two ended up squaring off at Wrestlemania in a retirement match. Savage brutally beat on the Warrior, but Warrior would not go down. After 5 elbow drops...Warrior bounced back...press slammed Savage...and pinned him. Savage had to retire.

Sherrie, his manager at the time, came out and began to beat down Savage. Who came in and made the save? Miss Elizabeth! Randy and Liz went on to get married at SummerSlam(though they were already married in real life) and Savage became forgiven in my heart.

Savage went on from there to have a pretty successful career in the WWE and WCW. He even eventually ended up in Hollywood appearing as Buzzsaw in Spiderman. Though he eventually walked away from wrestling and seemed to disappear from television, he never faded from the memory of his fans.

Like him or hate him, Randy Savage left a lasting impression on the wrestling community. His trademark voice and appearance are unrepeatable today. He will truly be missed by his family, friends, and fans.

So take the time today....raise a Slim Jim...and snap into it in honor of one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.

THE Macho Man

You couldn't be a teenage boy in the 80's and not watch wrestling. If you were watching wrestling you couldn't help but be impressed by "Macho Man" Randy Savage. He was the consumate professional in and out of the ring.

He was just masterful on the mic. I loved hearing him do promos and interviews. You never knew what he was going to come out with and it was usually spot on, with his signature voice. "You're mustache is crooked." "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" "I'm your friiiieeeennnndddd." It's just a thing of beauty.

Inside the ring, he was legendary for his work ethic. He was known for going over his matches with his "opponent" for days before a big PPV match. Going through each move, step by step. Just so they could get it right and wow the crowds. Most stars would go over the opening, ending and any big turns, but wouldn't go through the entire match before hand. Just sort of winging it, but not Randall Mario Poffo. He knew the crowd had paid good money and he wasn't going to disappoint.

He wasn't the Hulkster, who was completely "over" with the fans, but who was/is? However, he could hold his own with anyone. They just don't make them like the King of Macho Madness anymore. He was The Rock before The Rock even knew where the kitchen was, let alone started cooking. Dig it?

Here's to you Macho, give Andre the big elbow drop in the giant ring upstairs.
